Keynote Speaker, Dr. David J. Eaton, Bess Harris Jones Centennial Professor in Natural Resource Policy Studies, LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin. Water, Conflict, and Narrative.

Dr. Eileen G. Abels, Associate Professor University of Maryland College of Information Studies. Environmental scanning involves the assessment of the internal strengths and weaknesses of an organization in relation to the external opportunities and threats it faces. An important step in environmental scanning is the identification of external events that impacts an industry and the organizations in that industry. Information about the environment helps chart the future course of an organization. The environmental scanning process will be described and examples will be given of environmental factors that are likely to influence the future of special libraries.

Dr. Roberta I. Shaffer, Visiting Professor, University of Maryland College of Information Studies. Storytelling has become extremely popular in business communication. Many of the techniques are similar to those used with children. This presentation will explore some of the reasons why storytelling has found a welcome place in the boardroom, and how and when it can be most effectively engaged. Sample stories will be told to illustrate the value of this tool to convince, inspire, teach.
